How much should you pay for the car online? We have the tool for you!

April 20, 2020

Car pricing research is a process. You might start by looking on websites like CarsGuide and Autotrader to get an idea of how much a car you are interested in is worth, based on the sellers price.

Of course, all cars are priced at the discretion of the seller so each vehicle will be either higher or lower than the one previous.

If you see the car you want at a price that suits your budget, this obviously is the best case scenario. But we always want a better deal, right? So what else can you do to educate yourself in car prices? Especially if you want to buy at auction?

At Manheim, we have our Car Price Guide to help you with your car buying research.

What is the Car Price Guide?

The Car Price Guide is designed to provide you with an estimated price on vehicles you may be interested in bidding on at auction.

So of course, it is as labelled, a guide to help you get an idea on car prices of any vehicle we have sold at Manheim in the past.

As the name suggests, this is a guide and is just a representation of car prices, you should add this into your tools for car-buying research, but it shouldn’t be your only tool.

How to use the Car Price Guide

In essence, the Car Price Guide allows you to research the selling prices of a vehicle with the use of filters that you can interact with to explore the last 12 months of public sales data.

You can drill down to specific build year, body type and location (among other descriptors) to get an average price, which dynamically updates in the title section above the chart as you make your selections.

The chart itself shows sale prices for the current selection vs the odometer reading (km). This way, you can gauge what you are likely to pay for a vehicle matching your current selections.

The tool is designed only to show the last 12 months of sales data, to keep things relevant and you can filter the sale date range to be even more recent to see the latest market expectations.

Also, you can narrow your search by type of car or time frame by using the selections on the right-hand side of the chart.

The price stated at the top of the chart is the average price for the vehicle you have selected.

You can search all different makes and models to suit what you are looking to purchase. It is an easy to use tool, which can give you great market information.
