Shitbox Rally – Spring 2019: Meet the Team P.T 2

October 21, 2019

The Shitbox Rally has officially begun. As the adventure continues, we want to showcase some of the drivers taking part in the Shitbox Rally – Spring 2019 event, starting in Melbourne and heading for Townsville via Birdsville.

So what is the Shitbox Rally?

Well, you can find out more about it here, but essentially it is a road trip from one iconic Australian destination to the next in cars worth $1,000 or less (shit boxes) to raise much-needed funds for cancer research.

For 2019, it is the 10th anniversary for the Shitbox Rally events so Founder, James Freeman, and the team are taking on the outback in Australia, not just once, but twice, in two different Shitbox rallies, read more here.

Now we want to showcase “TEAM SPUDDY” – two mates from Victoria.

Gary said: “We are doing the rally in memory of our mate Gary “Spuddy” Cullen who was taken from us far too early at the age of 51. At his funeral he requested no flowers but for people to donate to Cancer Council. Sometimes at funerals you don’t see too many Cancer Council envelopes being filled.

It just didn’t seem right so shortly afterwards like most good ideas, during his wake we decided to enter Shitbox Rally. “Spuddy” was a massive V8 Super car fan, loved Holden and in particular Peter Brock. He regularly travelled to events all over Australia, but Bathurst was his Holy Grail. Bathurst was so special to him that in his will he specified that his ashes were to be spread at his favourite spot “Hell Corner” during the Bathurst races in October.

There would have been at least 40 of us that made the pilgrimage to Bathurst in 2017 for the spreading of the ashes and every time we see the cars round “Hell Corner” we see the tree where his ashes are spread – as we call it “Spuddy’s tree”. We are of course driving a Holden VT Commodore in this rally which happened to be owned by my Father in Law, Kev who we also lost to cancer”.

The rally kicks off on Saturday, October 19 and finishes in Townsville on Friday, October 25. The auction to sell the Shitbox rally cars will be on Saturday, October 26 at 10:00am at Manheim Townsville. See the cars on offer, please click here – or for more on the event, please go here.

Manheim is a proud supporter of the Shitbox Rally!
