The Shitbox Rally has officially kicked off and after introducing another team last week, this week we want to highlight Team Hollywood! As the adventure continues, we want to showcase some of the drivers taking part in the Shitbox Rally – Autumn 2019 event, starting in Perth and heading for Sydney via Uluru.
So what is the Shitbox Rally?
Well, you can find out more about it here, but essentially it is a road trip from one iconic Australian destination to the next in cars worth $1,000 or less (shit boxes) to raise much-needed funds for cancer research.
Twenty nineteen is the 10th anniversary of the Shitbox Rally events so Founder, James Freeman, and the team are taking on the outback in Australia, not just once, but twice, in two different Shitbox rallies, read more here.
Anyway, let’s look at Team Hollywood!
Terrance the Tarago started his Shitbox journey when the owner saw the potential in an unloved old boy that they picked up for $609. They desperately needed a lot of parts and soon picked up Donny the donor for $200 who had a blown head gasket but had brand new parts and new tyres which the Tarago needed. After fitting the bull bar, rear step, roof racks, new tyres and swapping over the two front seats for the captain’s chairs from Donny, Terrance was starting to look a lot better.
Next stop was to the paint shop and it went a little something like this:
“We’re looking for some bright pink paint” – owner.
“What are you painting” – shop.
“A car” – owner.
“We don’t sell automobile paint?” – shop.
“No probs we just want paint” – owner.
“But the house paint doesn’t spray too well” – shop.
“Who said anything about spraying we just want some paint and a few brushes” – owner.
So Terrance transitioned into his Hollywood pink.
For the performance upgrade, the owners sourced a genuine aluminium spoiler from eBay. Then add in some groovy horns, switch panels, light bar roof lights and then they needed some accommodation, it ended up being a double bed with a free mattress landed in the back and they were all set.
A big issue was the lack of effective suspension on the front that was soon fixed with 50 tennis balls from the local 2 dollar shop.
Team Hollywood completed the 2018 rally from Brisbane to Darwin and thought Terrence went so well they bought him back.
Once they brought him home, for the next rally the owners added some bling including many Minions and Disney characters, which now adorn the roof courtesy of liquid nails and the full Marilyn Monroe bed setting in the back that sets him off.
UPDATE: Day 7 – Terrance the Tarago handled the journey well but the corrugations in the road finally took their toll and the rear right window blew out on the track.
The rally kicked off on Wednesday, May 8 and finishes in Sydney on Friday, May 17. The auction to sell the Shitbox Rally cars will be on Saturday, May 18 at 10:00am at Manheim Moorebank. See the cars on offer, please click here – or for more on the event, please go here.
